Defining relative clauses give us essential information that tells us who or what we are talking about. (There are also non-defining relative clauses, which give extra non-essential information.) 👉Examples - The man who I was talking to earlier is my neighbor (without this detail I wouldn’t know who you are talking about) - The restaurant that we ate at last week went out of business (again, if you just say the restaurant I won’t know which one.) 👉Why use this structure? This is a structure you might use already, to give more details and specify what you’re talking about. It helps us be more specific. It’s also useful because we can form more complex sentences. For instance, instead of saying: “we ate at that restaurant. It went out of business”, the sentence could be combined into one: “the restaurant that we ate at went out of business.” This is particularly helpful if you find that you write a lot of short choppy sentences and want to incorporate more variety into your writing. ✍️ Activity Write a definition of a normal, everyday object. Try to make it funny or unusual! For example “a cup is an object that has a hole but doesn’t spill its contents”
