@davidflanks: Day 34 of the Flank Challenge. Amazon just "beat" earnings expectations by 216%. That number is fake, and almost nobody is talking about it. Amazon posted diluted EPS of $5.75 against $1.68 a year ago. Enormous. Except sitting inside that number is $53.4 billion of non-operating other income, and most of it is a mark-to-market gain on their stake in Anthropic. That is not money Amazon earned. That is a private company getting revalued on paper. Here's how you can tell it broke something: ➡️ Trailing PE is about 22. Forward PE is 32. For a company growing 20%, that is backwards ➡️ The inflated trailing earnings crushed the trailing multiple, so Amazon screens as cheap to every single person running a stock screener today ➡️ Strip the Anthropic mark and the real beat was closer to 8% However, this still was a great quarter for amazon: ➡️ The quarter underneath the fake number was genuinely strong: net sales up 20% to $200B, operating income up 43% ➡️ AWS grew almost 37% while expanding margins. AWS is 21% of revenue and 60% of operating income. AWS is the powerhouse of Amazon Amazon is not cheap.
