@beingjulia: Replying to @stephanierosales95 Let’s talk about what is and is not appropriate to wear to a job interview! #jobinterviewoutfits #workwear #workwearstyle #stylehelp #fashiontips
I HATEEE when I dress super professionally then the interviewer comes in in shorts and a t-shirt saying, "oh you didn't have to dress up."

Elder millennial here. I was always taught to keep jewelry minimal. Nothing dangly loud or distracting. Deodorant yes, perfume no. It might smell nice to you, but some people have allergies or don’t like certain scents. Keep makeup and nails professional, no crazy colors, save your creative side for when you get the job.

Are heels necessary for an interview? I typically only wear flats because heels hurt my back.

I just left an interview with a candidate who wore a sleeveless sweater crop top and torn jeans. She was such a promising candidate with internal references, but the outfit definitely impacted the perception.

Ok… so asking for all the fatties… Where do we go to get these nice clothes? I was a teacher and looking for a more professional job. I literally do not have any blazers or slacks like that.😭🙃 Plus size is so hard to find😭

What should I wear for a non corporate job interview? Specifically for a first time job in a bakery, cafe, or supermarket?

The thing that really frustrating professional wear is the shoes. "Professional" shoes are so painful to wear for me and others who have past injuries/ chronic foot issues that cause foot pain in most shoes. I have pairs of professional shoes I pull out for interviews, but I'm in pain the whole time, and I very grateful my current workplace allows sneakers or else I don't think I could work there. I wish there were more comfortable and professional shoes that don't cost an arm and a leg.

Something I was told as a teenager was to dress for the role above what you're interviewing for. Applying for a job with a casual dress code? Wear business casual. Dress code of business casual? Wear a more traditional corporate outfit. etc etc. It shows that you understand the job expectations but are also putting your best foot forward. When in doubt, shoot for more corporate and conservative because it's less likely for someone to take offense at you being overdressed than underdressed.

Good rule of thumb is one level of formality above what people wear day to day in the office, if they have social media or LinkedIn posts you can stalk what people wear

As a former recruiter, YES this is the way. Although some work environments are more casual, you should always look well-groomed and dressed above what you'd wear if you got the job. You should look like the manager of the job you want, unless you're already higher than that level 🥰

I wear leggings at my job some days, jeans or linen pants if I’m dressier. Still wore a suit to my interview.

I interviewed a woman who wore a tube top to the interview and I choked on her perfume because it was way too strong. I work at a bank.

People always caution about low cut tops, but current styles might not show cleavage but can still show the entire outline of the bust which is an interview no. Flowy and loose for a top is better than skintight. Fitted is okay but if it’s tight or a style that people can see the bottom curve of your chest, then it’s not right for an interview. Even if you wear it under a blazer, I would recommend no.
