As someone who spent a lot of time in juvenile detention and residential treatment centers as a teenager I strongly urge parents to avoid institutions as much as possible. Even the “good ones “ will cause long term harm

I feel like an example is 11-14 year olds lacking foresight, assessment of consequences, and impact even if they know basic right and wrong. This is not an argument to say they can’t be held accountable though, there have been heinous crimes in the news committed by youth which need consequences. However there’s been statements that kids ten and above suddenly develop ADULT level understanding when they’re actually somewhere in between. We don’t have to adultify children to advocate for proper proportional consequences, interventions, and measures. If the juvenile justice system actually did what it intended and didn’t just drop cases- children and youth would actually get the help (and consequences as needed) they need to become safe, non violent, and respectful adults. Not to mention a lot of these cases are rooted in trauma, neglect, violence, and desensitization. I think youth can be rehabilitated for abuse related issues as well as petty crime- but It depends on that child’s risk assessment (like a history of violence towards others or lack of empathy) that may involve increased & more intense measures. It’s case by case though and depends on the nuances of that particular child.

I think the “kidsarefuckingstupid” subreddit is active propaganda to encourage more punitive attitudes toward children. And we can’t know without investigation, but we should look to see if there’s evidence for intentional or paid campaigning on this. We do have real cases of for-profit youth detention centers bribing judges to send more kids into the system. That’s enough to make it worth looking at how much rising sentiment is organic or not.

Crimes like doing drugs, dealing, etc sure… but I just dont care if teens who do monstrous things get tried as adults. Like the 3 boys who held down a little girl, shoved gravel down her throat, as they brutally 🍇 her. Like in what world can young ppl like that be rehabilitated? Especially bc their families? Instead of attacking the boys? Attacked the victim. So clearly not going to prison would just throw them into an environment where their actions were okay. But let me guess, you just want them to go to therapy and then be released right?
