We still do those screening... But when glasses are needed most parents dont get the glasses.

Also, when it comes to thing that we KNOW they have medical issues (ADHD, ADD, autism…) we are legally not allowed to say anything because we are not a doctor. I’m soooo tired of parents wanting us to raise their kids, but also really don’ want us to…it’s a very confusing profession…

As a mom with a child with glasses, I could neverrrr imagine putting that ownership on teachers?! 🤯 Parents are responsible for our own child’s medical needs!

Im sick of hearing “why are you judging parents”. Because there is a difference between being a good and a bad parent. The parent is the one ultimately responsible for the child. Their health, their wellbeing, their education, their behaviors.. etc etc are all the parents responsibility and how that kid is reflects your parenting skills.

I’m a teacher, my district screens in 1st, 3rd and 5th. My child failed his in 5th and needed glasses. Neither I or his teacher noticed.

They got mad that the schools were screening because they were purposely not taking their kids to an eye doc because they don’t want to pay for or go through the trouble, of kids having glasses

Or you send an email or call home and say they can’t see and 6 months later still no glasses 🤷♀️our school even gives out free vouchers.

In Saskatchewan, eye appointments are seen as so important that the government pays for a yearly check up for every child under 18. The school will ask if you’ve taken your child. 😳

I am a speech language pathologist for a public school district. I have to screen hearing allllllll the time. The amount of time I have spent chasing down parents of kids I can tell have significant hearing loss to get them to sign permission for our audiologist to evaluate them for free is absurd.

that's NOT why we don't do those screenings anymore. we don't do them because Republicans cut so much funding to public schools that WE DON'T HAVE SCHOOL NURSES ANYMORE. We have a "medical assistant" (who is not a trained medical professional) that is there daily. and we share an RN who rotates between eight elementary schools.

as the school psych that would be receiving said evaluation- it then pains me that my district has us go through the entire evaluation, get the data, and then I can’t find them eligible because I don’t have that specific piece of data 😵💫😅
