Yes! Coming from a close minded countryside I once heard my grandma discuss the term “kweenie” literally translated to “I don’t know” for a non binary person. Turns out there have always been non binary people they were accepted as their own people. And while they probably still didn’t have it easy there was place for them in society and there still is. The language just changed.

I grew up in rural Australia and while we didn’t have a specific term like woods queer (though I do love that term) I have noticed the people who lived further out of town would have similar mentalities and weren’t really all that stressed about the boxes as much. There was very much an understanding that nature doesn’t care about our boxes and it will do things to mess with them (like when my mum’s horse had an intersex foal or the time one of our friend’s hens started looking and acting like a rooster) so why stress when humans did it too? Just let people do their thing and leave them alone lol.

I've never heard the term "woods queer" but I am familiar with the sort of experiences you're speaking of. while I never had intercourse with any of my friends or directly touched them in a sexual way, I did have sexual experiences with them. took me several years to realize that I'm bisexual for some reason 😂

its come to my attention during the straight woman/bi man discourse that a lot of straight people think being straight means youre only attracted to other straight people, so I think you're onto something with the queer is a gender thing.

this was such an interesting and informative video. as an urban/suburban queer, i agree that queerness is akin to a cultural third gender. i'd never heard of woodsqueer before this, but it sounds like quite a beautiful concept in rural communities.

I feel drawn to this as someone who spent their entire childhood camping, hiking, canoeing and hunting. I live in a big city for safety and access to healthcare, not out of choice, but rather necessity. Where are we? I would love to find "woodsqueer" community.

the way i grew up was always kind of straddled between things. our house was in a suburb, but we were frequently in the woods. my mom was rural, then she moved to the suburbs, always talking about how she hated it. i never really liked the suburbs, i always wished i lived out with nature where we were so often. i live rural now, and although im not sure if i have the right to woodsqueer, i certainly feel a connection to the ideas of it. anyway, just thought dumping lol

I live in a tiny mountain community in western Canada pop. 130 and fully redneck residents. I'm completely accepted here as a trans woman that has integrated into local life. The fascinating part is they will support or defend me but they also have no desire to talk about gay/trans issues. at all. Acceptance was granted based on community participation and not because of making an issue of acceptance.

We had the same thing growing up in suburban council estate England! There was this notable androgynous butch called 'Leanne the Man' who was often referred to with he/him, but born a woman. It seems acceptance was conditional, based on things like your work ethic - Leanne was a notable carpenter - but it was acceptance. Wish I could've done anthropology or something to research it further.

yo you just gave name to something I grew up with. nobody talked about it but everyone knew the "lifelong bachelor" guy who ran the sunday school at the little church. nobody asked him when he would get married and more treated him as a person who had a more important purpose than traditional gender or sexuality roles.
