Worked at a restaurant in the ‘80’s that had ‘complimentary bread with your order’. No order? Bread was $35. Stopped the scammers real quick.

I used to be a server at an Olive Garden that was close to the “not so great” side of town. 🙄🤣 We were ALL OVER THIS 💩 when it happened and it happened so much at one point they put a sign up about people coming in thinking they can just sit and eat breadsticks for 3+++ hours.

at the Mexican restaurant I worked at we had a button to charge people who came in just to eat the free chips salsa and sopapillas. if they didn't order at least a drink they got charged. people were always piiisssssssed when we handed them a check. they were banned if they left without paying it. loved my GM

The best way to deal with this is to sit down beside them, be very sympathetic and offer to use your phone to get online and help them locate the nearest food bank. Tell them that you totally understand that times are tough and you want to help them to get some proper food for home.

legit the reason restaurants that offer complementary things (bread, chips and salsa, etc.) had to start listing *with purchase* .... they have ruined a good thing :(
