Davhana was the eldest son of King Rasithu Ramabulana of the Venda people. Following his father's death in 1864, a bitter succession war erupted between Davhana—the rightful heir by birthright—and his younger brother, Makhado, leading to a split in the Venda Kingdom and regional conflict. The Succession Dispute Birthright vs. Popularity: As the firstborn son, Davhana was expected to inherit the throne. However, key royal figures and royal family elders (such as the makhadzi Nyakhulu and khotsimunene Madzhie) favored the younger brother, Makhado, who was seen as exceptionally brave and popular. The Struggle for Insignia: Royal tradition required the transfer of sacred royal objects like the Zwitungulo. Makhado confronted and defeated Davhana to secure these sacred items for a traditional inauguration. Defeat and Exile Flight to Luonde: Defeated in the civil struggle, Davhana fled his traditional home ground. Alliance with Albasini: Davhana sought refuge in Luonde along the Luvuvhu River, placing himself under the protection of the influential Portuguese trader and South African Republic (ZAR) Native Commissioner, João Albasini. Intervention by the Transvaal Boers Political Pawns: The South African Republic colonial authorities tried to exploit internal Venda divisions. They backed Davhana as a rival claimant to undermine King Makhado’s authority in the Zoutpansberg region. Establishment of Ha-Davhana: Despite losing the overarching Venda kingship to Makhado (who went on to rule successfully as a revered military leader), Davhana established a localized chiefdom (Ha-Davhana) in the Mphene/Luonde area under his lineage, later succeeded by his son Nesengani. #vendatiktokers #vendastiktok #vendasonline #vendas #vhavenda
