Claude Monet avoided using pure black paint for most of his career. He believed black did not truly exist in nature and that shadows were filled with color. Instead of black, he mixed rich dark tones like deep blues, greens, and reds to create vibrant shadows. This is awesome.

Also, the hues aren’t that far off. Cools on the lower face, warms on the cheeks and nose, yellows on the forehead where the bone is close to the surface. They’re just super saturated, and I get that stylistic choice. Cool work.
