Sometimes I think the cruelest joke of all is that the universe is so large and the speed of light so limiting that we can see so much if it but we will never be able to touch anything but the tiniest fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of it.

Things like this are why I can't possibly fathom the idea of being alone in the universe.

We’re spoiled now with so many unbelievable images coming from the James Webb telescope. When this image was released in 1995, it really blew our collective minds. I recall National Geographic doing a special on it. There’s so much universe out there!

Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

Using the established tennis ball scale... how many tennis balls would be the entire sky spherical coverage

It’s incomprehensible the scale of the universe, there is no way we are the only life out there.

Tell me if I’m wrong. But if you do that for any patch of space for 10 days, you are likely to get the same result?

I love that the Hubble telescope was a disaster in the beginning. Then, they had to build basically a contact lens for it and do another space flight to fix it. The “contact lens” was declared to smoothest thing ever created at that point. Nobody is perfect and mistakes are made by us all yet even with mistakes we can come up with a fix that can give us this.

this is equivalent to an ancient society of people who all stare at the sun, until one among them suggested they look to the stars instead

The Hubble deep field is very cool, but are the galaxies in it really containing “hundreds of billions” of stars? The first galaxies visible in the early universe, as observed by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) in 2026, just a few hundred million years after the Big Bang, are often only a few hundred light-years across. But I never see how big the galaxies is in the Hubble deep field view are.
