Toph is like the young girl who pretends to hate pink and fluffy dresses and princesses so she doesn’t get labeled as “weak, girly, fragile, dumb” by ‘the boys’. When in reality she is complex and encompassing of multiple truths at once, blind AND wise, disabled AND strong, delicate AND tough, silly AND sophisticated, vulgar AND educated.

I’ve BEEN saying this, and because of tophs internalised misogyny, male fans see her as a part of the boys which is why they like her so much compared to other strong female characters like Korra and Katara

I don’t think she hates WOMEN but more hates being seen as feminine. all her life, she wasn’t allowed to do anything because being feminine / a women was seen as weak and put her in a cage kind of. Feminine was something negative in her mind (don’t flame me, its just my opinionn as a teen girl)

Saying “I don’t hate women because I like Toph” is like when people say “I’m not racist I have black friends”

I agree, femininity be catching stray’s from Toph constantly. It doesn’t make her a bad character, it makes sense considering who raised her🫤

Not only was she expected to be delicate, but it was enhanced and focused on for her that she was even more fragile than other girls her age because of the way her father treated her blindness. She had that role forced upon her in a way she couldn't truely interact with. It was being done to her, not with her. Toph is such a good complex character especially for being the youngest on the team

Because they see her as a man. Then they’ll claim to like her as a girl to excuse their misogyny and they use her character for power scale

Toph has internalized misogyny and it’s important (for the people in the back) to talk about how this isn’t the show’s promotion of misogyny but rather just a beautifully written character, as you showcased. One with flaws, nuance, trauma, and multiple layers. In this show all the women are written so differently and with depth. It’s one of the many features of this show that make it incredible.

I never realized all these years that toph was misogynistic even though it's so blatantly obvious now that you have pointed it out. holy heck.

Yep exactly, she's a tween/teen and in that phase of despising femininity and womanhood. And her hatred is heightened even more due to where and when she exists. Many women and girls eventually learn that they can be masculine/ not feminine and still not hate femininity and women that are in touch with femininity.

Toph is a VERY GOOD written character and really difficult person to be around. Also, we can see how her internalised misogyny affects her family as well

I feel like this also ties to the ableism she faced in her home life, traditional gender roles were forced even more on her for being a fragile blind girl by her father.
