I’m doing a little experiment because of your content. Before my partner and I began to live together over a year ago, he had his own home. He lived in that house for two years, and befriended an elderly neighbor woman. My partner is in his 50s and she’s in her 80s. She lives alone and got into the habit of inviting him for dinner virtually every week. And he would do things for her like help with the yardwork and anything she needed done around the house. She really thought of him as a son. Since he moved away, we see her from time to time, and call her every week. We call her every week because I remind him. Three weeks ago I decided to stop reminding him. It’s his relationship, not mine. He hasn’t called her or mentioned her name in those three weeks. I feel badly for her because I’m sure she’s hurt. I’m just so tired of being responsible for his life.

I recently started doing a monthly lunch w/girlfriends. New restaurants and culinary adventures together. Have mentioned some places to hubs on many occasions with no follow thru to actually go eat there so I’m getting the adventure w/friends. He gets jealous band asked me to let him know when I go to these places and he can get me to pick something up for him. I said no. Shocked him but I said, my friend time is for me alone. I do not want to go thinking I have an errand to run for someone else, have to get food home because it sits in a hot car (or cold in winter), can’t do something else after I leave the resto because I have to get food home to accommodate a mealtime etc. I said ‘you feel free to pick yourself up anything from anywhere. You have a car and free will to choose just like we do when we have girl lunch days’. The look on his face told me he wasn’t expecting that. It felt freeing to say it out loud instead of just thinking it and doing it against my own want. Thanks for sharing this Kelley.

This content is life changing. I’d like to encourage you to write a book. This seems to be on our collective conscious right now as I’m hearing it from multiple sources; however, you have the smartest, most relevant POV.

Doing this process with a small child is so tough inside a marriage. But I appreciate hearing your story, even if our circumstances are different.

How old are you? cause I'm 40 and made this shift in the last few years. I think its related to becoming older.

My husband now says to me- I’m not judging you. I was glad when I came home and saw you sitting in the sun with your chickens. That really made me feel so good.

Yes exactly! I used to point out the things I did hoping he’d see how much effort I put in. I would make specific meals, planning, buying cooking them. I would ask how it tasted and I’d get “ it tastes okay” every time. I would get dolled up and ask how do I look? You look nice every single time. Never a sincere reaction and he would act bothered if I wanted to have any kind of serious conversation. He continually gaslit me and I felt confused most of the time. He’s a master manipulator and I can’t believe how much I put up with.

when women get strong enough from decentering, can they help their men? If so, they may be able to sit with and have their emotions and not feel weak (which is socialized?). Then they may have the tools, language, awareness of feelings to meet women in the emotional world they value?

Not have access to you? How so? Do you cut off communication? Stop engaging? How is this possible when there is a family in the home that takes both of us to manage? How do you manage the home together with out access to you or each other?

Yep! I just had a conversation with him : if my role as a wife is solidified by the way I can serve you ; I don’t want the title . I’m not a servant and I didn’t marry you to be just that !

Anyone’s value to someone is what you do in their life for them. You can center yourself for yourself but you take it to far and you no longer have any value. Just like everything else in life to much of something isn’t ever good.

Okay but how to we detach our worth from what we do for them when that’s how THEY define our worth? 😞 I know I’m a worthy person just for being in his life. But he seems to not see that.
