Regardless of how well Operation Barbarossa initially went, the Wehrmacht was never realistically capable of forcing the Soviet Union to capitulate. The Soviets had relocated much of their industry eastward, beyond Germany’s practical reach, and because Generalplan Ost made this an existential war of annihilation, surrender was barely an option. Germany simply lacked the manpower, resources and logistical capacity for such a vast, prolonged war, while the Soviets could replace men and equipment on a scale the Germans could not match. Allied assistance significantly accelerated Germany’s defeat, but it did not fundamentally determine the war’s eventual outcome.
