What I hate is when people try to push you into getting another dog (or in my case, cat) after the loss. And I can’t explain to them that they’re not just dogs/cats to us, they’re best friends. Companions. Confidants. Family. You can’t replace them and have the grief go away.

My last dog had degenerative myelopathy. I spent almost a year in that anticipatory grief stage and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. I wish I had advice, but all I can do is sad I’m so sorry. Make as many memories as you can 💕

Have you thought about getting a puppy now so Rudder can train him to do the things he likes?

My 12 yr old vizsla recently got sick with liver cancer. He’s my soul dog and had him his whole life. He’s still healthy enough to eat and play and cuddle. Idk if im more scared to lose him or watch him get sick knowing I won’t be able to help him. Ugh. I so feel you I’m so sorry

Trust that Rudder will play a big role in choosing the right pup for you next. Each dog I’ve gotten after losing one seems like they were handpicked by my baby in the sky. He knows what you’ll need most💛

It's also something that I don't think has talked about enough. I don't think enough people know what it is. I think if more people understood what anticipatory grief was, we can all be here for each other to work through it. sending you an immense amount of love

I walked this road in January with my best friend. He was my life and without him, I was lost. I did get another dog…after every sign in the universe told me to go get this new boy. Weirdest moment of my life was meeting the boy who was to hopefully be my new best friend. Six months later, we are still figuring each other out but I love him so much and I’m honoring Fawkes by making sure Amigo lives the best life possible!

My dog is nearing the end of his life and requiring a lot of care. We’ve had well over a decade together and I’ve never been an adult without him… though it’s hard to picture myself without a dog for the rest of my life, I’m absolutely convinced that no other dog will compare and I worry getting another is setting myself up for failure or disappointment and that’s not fair to that dog. So many mixed emotions.

In a similar situation with my prematurely aging soul dog (autoimmune) realizing ‘how am I going to find someone just like him?’ But I’ve come to learn that the universe sends you who you need in order to discover the person inside that you didn’t know. Your next journey may not bring you 5am sunrises, but could bring you incredible sunsets that you never would have known were destined to be part of you. Sending you love and hugs.

Going through a behavior euthanasia right now and it's brutal. Thank goodness I have a second dog to cry on, but it's the hardest heartbreak. Praying for you so much

Rudder has been showing you the way. You will find who you need when the time is right to do all the things you like. Go enjoy your boy while he’s still here so you’ve got a ton of memories doing the things you both love 💗

If I can suggest something, foster. I lost my soul dog in January, losing her was the hardest loss of my life. I fostered in her honor. Down the line, we did meet a dog through fostering we “foster failed,” we knew he was the perfect fit for us. But I never once regret all the other animals I helped before him 💚

After i lost my girl. I ended up rescuing a dog not long after and wasn’t ready. But when i tell you my pup now is truly meant to be it’s like my previous girl picked her for me and she does so many things like my girl who passed. Rudder will put the right pup in your life if you ever decide to get another one. Sending love and prayers ❤️

well said. when I lost Dak I quite literally did not know who I was. I know you maddie and I know your next dog will be different but you will come to love everything that comes with that individual dog. it will be different but you will love it because the dog you love loves it. I promise ❤️

I felt this exact same way with my soul dog. She was a little terrier mutt I had the privilege of spending 15 beautiful years of my life with. When she began dying from heart failure, I struggled with severe anticipatory grief, and after I lost her, I genuinely thought I would never get another dog again. I was so afraid that no dog could ever live up to the life and bond I had with her, and that I would spend the entire time comparing them to something irreplaceable….Then I found my current boy. He is different from her, of course, and I’ve realized that’s okay. Loving my soul dog is actually what made me fall so deeply in love with terriers in the first place, and eventually it led me to another dog who has given me everything I needed and so much more. He never replaced her, and he never had to. The love is different because they are different, but it is every bit as deep. I will miss my girl for the rest of my life. But my current dog has healed a part of my heart that I genuinely didn’t know could heal. So for now, my best advice is to just focus on Rudder. Love him, enjoy him, and let yourself have the time you still have together. Whatever comes after him doesn’t matter until that day actually comes. ❤️‍🩹
