I’ve been scared to say this for a few months now, mostly for fear of jinxing myself, but after five years of frequently debilitating, always inconvenient chronic pain, I’m starting to experience pain-free days. I can’t even begin to express how amazing this is for me, because since March 2020 I’ve been going to bed knowing that I would wake up in pain—the only question was “how much.” Up until the last two or three months, I could count the exceptions to that rule on one hand. I was trying to outrun (what felt like) an inevitable truth: that this pain might be a part of my life for the rest of my life. It wasn’t pessimism—it was my reality. For over a thousand days, I felt like my pain ran my life. It stunted my emotions, blocked my mental clarity, and limited my physical stamina. It literally impacted the flow of blood to my brain But over the last few months, something has been shifting—pain-free days aren’t out of reach anymore. I’ve even come close to experiencing pain-free weeks. I feel a version of myself starting to resurface—a version that I miss deeply. A version of myself that I haven’t known since pre-pandemic. I’m not living a pain-free life (yet), but I’m starting to believe that it’s a possibility for me, again. I feel strong again. And man, that feels amazing.
