In June 2019, just before my 39th birthday, I had a miscarriage. Then, a month after my birthday, my husband passed away. As I was packing away his belongings, I came across his sock drawer. Inside was a tiny baby onesie he had bought after my first miscarriage when I was 31. The moment I held that little onesie, I completely broke down. I cried so hard, grieving not only the loss of my husband, but also what I thought was the loss of our dream of having a baby together. A little over a month after my husband passed away, something felt different. I kept telling everyone, “I think I’m pregnant.” My body just felt different, but no one believed me. They thought I was just overwhelmed with grief. Even after I took a pregnancy test, people still didn’t think it could be true. So I made a doctor’s appointment for the very next day. I remember calling my manager and telling him I couldn’t come to work because I had just found out I was pregnant and needed to see the doctor. Looking back, I can still remember the tone in his voice—he probably thought I had lost my mind. When the doctor performed the ultrasound, I looked at the screen and couldn’t believe my eyes. There was our baby… already beautifully formed. I couldn’t stop crying. Through my tears, I told the doctor that my husband had passed away. He handed me my ultrasound pictures. When I showed my family the ultrasound, they were completely shocked. None of us expected that miracle. Today, I share my story because I want anyone who has experienced loss to know this: don’t lose hope. Sometimes, when life feels like it has taken everything from you, God has a way of placing a miracle in your hands when you least expect it. My daughter became my light in the darkest season of my life, and for that, I will be forever grateful.
