Its origin likely comes from medieval carpentry, where long nails were driven through doors and bent flat (dead) to secure them, making the nail permanently useless and "dead". Famous users include Shakespeare and Charles Dickens, who used it in A Christmas Carol to describe Marley.  Meaning & Usage Meaning: Totally dead, lifeless, irrevocably finished, or not working.
