To have a conversation with you it is imperative that you have an actual understanding of what DEI is and also what white privilege is. DEI is a process to go through that doesn't allow bias to cause qualified applicants to be passed over for "the opportunity" to get an interview. For example, I know a local business owner that absolutely refuses to interview combat veterans. He thinks they are mentally unstable from the experience. In order to avoid interviewing them he just doesn't interview any veterans. A DEI process would eliminate that bias and bring veterans in for an interview. His bias is against veterans, it could be black people, Asian people, people with tattoos or anything else. As for white privilege it is not that your life was easy, you didn't struggle or that you didn't work hard. White privilege is simply that your race doesn't need to be considered. For example, being white we don't need to wonder if that cop pulled us over because we are white and driving in the wrong neighborhood. We don't have to wonder if that cop will kill us for being a little belligerent. We don't have realtors steer us away from white neighborhoods. We don't get followed around in retail stores like we are going to steal things. So, white privilege is just not having to think that bad things are happening because you are white.

The question on the screen asks, "Why do you deserve special treatment?" The answer is that nobody deserves SPECIAL treatment. But everyone deserves EQUAL treatment. That's what DEI was/is trying to achieve. I wish we didn't need DEI but we, as a society, are not doing it on our own.

I think the problem starts when people think privilege = not poor. I agree, there are no handouts in this world, I’m absolutely sure you did work extremely hard for where you are today and that you came from nothing. However, your skin color never hindered you while you were already struggling. DEI levels the playing field for minorities who constantly get overlooked. It’s not about giving handouts - it’s literally there to put a spotlight on qualified individuals who get passed up SPECIFICALLY because of their skin color. Emphasis on qualified.

Why are black men SENTENCED (same crime, same background, same criminal records) to longer prison sentences compared to their white counterparts. Same crime, same background, different sentence. This is the meaning of systemic racism

As a recruiter in corporate America… DEI is nothing about what you spoke on. DEI is about ensuring discrimination isn’t legal in the workplace and ensures you receive training around how to properly discuss and NOT discuss certain topics. For example, I interview someone & they say they can’t work Sundays due to religious beliefs, I CANNOT legally ask follow up questions or discriminate against them for the job unless it’s literally a job that is only to work on Sundays or weekends. DEI is to allow space for nuance, education and awareness that we are all humans not robots in the work place. So, please put the microphone down.

Race and sex is used as a excuse. Everybody gets given opportunities to be great and successful. Life is a deck of cards. A person with a bad hand if played right can win, I personally born with a great hand can fumble the bag. It’s about the work that u do and if u wanna play around with that bad hand. Ur not gonna make progress. Race and sex isn’t an excuse to justify a reason why u can’t do certain things. People are in situations that nobody knows (financially, emotionally). Life comes for everybody and things happen but u don’t get to use your sex race or religion as an excuse on why ur in ur situation.

I fully believe that applications of any kind should not ask what race or gender you are. DEI allows others to put a preference on those applications whether they consciously realize it or not based on their life experiences. If race and gender are never asked and names are hidden until the person is chosen then it would be a better merit based system

Why is accessibility considered handout? If DEI was abused that’s a different conversation, but DEI is about accessibility. I’ve never understood this “handout to ppl of color ” argument

I think we need to differentiate what is a “handout” vs what is considered “help and aid” to those who have been disenfranchised without it.🤷‍♂️

U make a great point. Some of these commenters make great points. It seems we used to be able to integrate just fine But now the divide and cultures seem soo different that it seems impossible to coexist. Idk what happened.

Here’s why, because as you can see in today’s political climate that there was A LOT more racism buried in America than most of us thought. That racism comes with a METRIC FCK TON of prejudice. And unfortunately it’s focused within those people who control professional environments, thus making things like DEI necessary. Now that’s said, your intent is correct, but your perspective is a touch myopic right now. And from a very personal place of anonymity NOT known by a lot POC. Judgement is a funny thing, and you’ve far less of it naturally. So hope my 2c helps. The best you can do is be a good person with the local impact you have.

if you are actually thinking about this in good faith, it's important to understand that any one individual's experience does not wash away the idea behind "white privilege". no one is arguing that there aren't poor white people who have been dealt a bad hand
