besides server side, gtm also offers some sort of cdn based way to setup first party look

Server-side tracking is worth doing, but the reason given here isn't right. Safari doesn't block gtm.js. ITP has never blocked third-party scripts, it limits cookies. What actually kills the googletagmanager.com domain is ad blockers and Firefox strict mode 🥲
The real gain from going server-side is cookie lifetime. ITP caps JavaScript-set first-party cookies at 7 days, and cookies set by your own server survive longer than that. One catch nobody selling this mentions: ITP also catches CNAME cloaking, so a tracking subdomain pointed at someone else's infrastructure gets the same 7-day cap. You need an A record to a server you control.
Two other things 🤨 Nobody gets to 99%, especially under GDPR consent, and 80-90% is the honest ceiling. And when reported conversions jump without anything else changing, that is the measurement moving, not the revenue. Better signal does help the bidding algorithms, which is the argument I'd have led with, but you can only prove it with a geo or holdout test, not with the pixel's own numbers.

He’s definitely overselling the importance of sever side tracking. If you are using CAPI on Meta, yes you might lose out on tracking for customers that don’t use the same email from Facebook to purchase, because that’s when it has to rely on the pixel which is blocked by safari, but that’s only 10/20% of conversions or less. Keeping clients is about improving results. The percentage of ‘lost’ conversions is a constant - it shouldn’t impact whether you keep clients or not.

You can also set up Google Tag Gateway. Easier if you're using Cloudflare.

How do you manage this and still respect the GDPR, as a visitor needs to have the ability to object to the collection of their data.

If we are loading the third parties (hubspot, fb, gads) thru gtm though, would those still be blocked if gtm is server side?

That’s a good tip. I heard Shopify is doing server side now. I’m sure it’ll be commonplace soon

Can you point me towards your video on server side tracking setup? I work in paid media for a large public company and our tracking is dog water... it's embarrassing. Just found you through my fyp
