When you said “I want to be the most famous person in the world but you can’t say anything negative about me,” it reminded me of 2016/17 Taylor Swift. Her being so overexposed + attempting to control what the media was saying about her is what led to the “cancellation.” Really enjoyed this video!

I think this is juxtaposed interestingly with Zendaya who literally said the same thing on the carpet for dual Spiderman/Odyssey press tours and 5 total premieres slated for this year, also a Disney alum, also in a high profile relationship —- received very differently.

This is such a smart take. The framing of a Faustian bargain where you cannot get something for nothing really rings true for me. I do think the smartest stars understand this. Tom Cruise is the best example, IMO. He’s a terrible person but he was absolutely right to step away after the couch-jumping thing. He’s rehabbed his image by staying away from the public eye, and I really believe that’s the only reason he’s still got a career in Hollywood.

i think she needs to be in control of discourse around her, especially topics she feels are close to her. She had her ex husband sign an NDA preventing him from speaking. Who knows if she's had other sign NDAs. We only know about that one bc legally, it must be made public. I think silently, along the way, her team has been careful to mitigate negative topics about her in their early stages. This is why we haven't seen her in a major scandal for so long. The signs were always there but only few knew about them.

The thing about Ariana is that she has been generally beloved for her entire career with pretty limited criticism, compared to many of her peers. She was a Nickelodeon darling and ended up getting a spin off show based solely on how much everyone loved her. When she pivoted to music, people almost immediately started comparing to her legendary singers like Mariah, Celine, and Whitney. All of her personal relationships were a little side-eyed, but basically just accepted. When you compare that to other women in the industry, very few of them just get a pass for things like that. She put her all into Wicked and I fully believe she thought she'd get an Oscar. Then all of a sudden she didn't get the industry praise she expected, people turned on her with the Ethan Slater controversy because he had a new baby, and then people became more critical of her in general and it was really the first time in her career that she experienced that level of criticism. It's actually a very common trajectory for child stars; however, it usually happens to most child stars earlier in their careers resulting in them either leaving the industry or being crushed by it.

It’s not lost on me that Miley Cyrus (she seems like a comparable artist to me) is able to live her life and put out art she cares about without playing into any of this. We barely know anything about her relationship or divorce. Like it is very possible, you just have to be willing to accept you won’t be the most famous person alive and everything you drop may not be a commercial hit if you go that route and idk if Ariana is willing to give that up.

People that truly want to distance themselves from fame don’t announce it, they just do it. Every aspect of her life has become a performance and I don’t think she has any concept of who she is as a person, and I honestly think her relationship choices reflect that. I’m sure it plays into her physical presentation and choices, too.

This is why I think Addison’s metaphor of fame being a gun is SO brilliant! you either harm yourself with your fame because you don’t know how to/cant handle it correctly, hurt others by being reckless with it or you learn to handle it and even defend yourself

I love that you always hold people responsible for their actions. I think people want to make excuses for people, when the truth is trauma isn’t your fault, but it is your responsibility. It’s not a magic wand you get to wave when you treat people like shit. It helps put their actions into context, but it doesn’t make them allowable or okay.

The Petal video besides being a crazy body check was also soo entitled it was fascinating like she genuinely thought if she was doe eyed enough the role of Audrey Hepburn would just be handled to her on a silver platter. It’s also really interesting to me how much she clearly related to the character Pearl lol.

I think there’s a difference between wanting every opportunity to practice your craft and entertain, whether that be through film, on stage or through being funny and personable in interviews (also knowing that part of the exposure is contractual and pushed on an artist by their team), and wanting to be famous. I get the sense that someone like Taylor Swift gets energy from both the craft and from fame but I am not sure that’s the case with Ariana. Truly no idea either way, but just because you are famous doesn’t mean you want to be

I know we’re not talking about the obvious but I can’t help but draw parallels between the control she probably feels with her body and how she wants to control people’s perception/opinions on her. She can just give us her art and let it go but she chooses partakes in the spectacle.

As a loooong time fan of hers from the start of her career, she’s really never really experienced the pitfalls her peers did earlier in their careers (specifically Miley and Demi). In actuality she’s been extremely beloved for most of her career. She was never set up for controversies and her image was largely intact and very protected (possibly through her mother being who she is and her family being wealthy). She moved through child acting, music, pop culture stardom very seamlessly. Her first album was made to be a mega hit. Her label had faith in her in a way that other child actor-turned-artists didn’t have as their music careers shifted in their teens to shirk the child image. She hit her mega fame again largely intact while facing harrowing events rather than scandals. The first real scandal was donut incident which was more about the unpatriotic “I hate America” line (not the lick). I also think wicked was (in her mind) her magnum opus her biggest ambition and biggest achievement (not music) and it not going the way she thought (Oscar) shattered her ego as it had largely gone untested, she IS the biggest star in the world with multiple 1s and record smashing feats. The Ethan relationship being criticised at the same time is a double hit, when in the past dating/exes were a fun thing for her to show off (the Pete engagement and thank u next being a smash and talking honestly about bad relationship choices). I think it all shocked her and is the first time she’s experiencing the open loud noise of this negativity at this level - of course her career has had this all along but not in the vocal hateful way in the public sphere not nicher spaces and on her body which may feel like a I give up or a retaliation for working so hard throughout the years in output never being challenged until it’s unavoidable and ugly to the public

So appreciate this take. I think when you’re young (really young) you can’t comprehend the trade-off you’ll make with pursing fame- however, Ariana is old enough (and experienced enough) to understand the trade-off.

you always hit the nail on the head!! let us remember that she was supposedly done with music for a while (her words) and is now back at it. i say this as a fan, you don’t get to ask us to spend $500 plus on tickets and watch all of your media but then also we cannot ever say a bad word about the obviously concerning behaviors in front of our face
