@therapistinrecovery: This is why understanding OCD, making sure your loved ones really understand ocd, and certainly having a therapist who has an abundant knowledge of ocd is so important. It is so easy to get pulled into the cycle even unintentionally! If you have a loved one with ocd, are a therapist wanting to learn more, or want to learn more about it yourself please consider my online course coming this fall. It will give you everything you need to know about this beast so that you don’t unknowingly feed it! You may even just get better ❤️ #ocd #obsessivecompulsivedisorder #compulsions #CBT #ocdtok

This is so important, traditional talk therapy made my ocd SO much worse before I found an ocd specialist for therapy

I have a really tough time forgiving my partner’s former therapist for not being OCD-informed and thus just affirming the shit out of her obsessions and being like “yeah what you’re feeling is justified.” Like, that’s malpractice. It’s just so common that no one is being held accountable for it.

How will we ever know if what we are doing is co compulsing or not 😭😭😭. Because seeking reassurance in so many ways is normal and human?!

My 10 year old has OCD and he co-compulses with me by constantly seeing reassurance and checking in about the smallest details. It’s exhausting 😢

I had these with a former partner—asking the same questions over and over. They were really good about disengaging with humor. Answering with, “why, are you a cop?” “That is a secret” “I plead the fifth!” Acknowledging they heard me without answering the question.

I feel like I have coped with my OCD extremely well for the most part, but the sticking point for me is my health OCD because I have had real health issues and they definitely run in my family. striking the balance between logical concern and research and OCD tendencies is unbelievably difficult.

It took me until I was about 38 to realize that straight talk therapy was just a cycle of OCD rumination for me . I loved my therapist but for me personally talk therapy is probably the worst thing for me at the time. It’s so hard on the people in our life to set those boundaries because it feels so embarrassing to be told hey, you’re doing it again, but that’s one of the first steps at least for me of breaking the pattern.

My daughter does this, just got her a Bipoc therapist cuz she’s Native & black (she’s not icd trained) She’s gonna have to start over with a specialist.

What if you just reach out to loved ones for support because you’re struggling? I just called my family because I’m struggling and having a really hard time with my mental health. I just needed someone to know what I’m going through and wanted someone to talk to so I feel less alone. Is that a compulsion?

What about people who have OCD around suicidal ideation. They need reasurance and constant conversation that they have control of their own life. How do you support this kind of person? How is that treated? What about planning OCD? Where the plan of how to do any task has to be discussed at length before ever doing the task?

Why would my ocd therapists tell me to push through emotional flooding, hyperventilating, and shut downs during exposures?
