@aveovershares: This case is analytically rich / culturally illuminating, no question… but I dunno, man, I have some pretty serious follow up questions… #darkhistory #historical #truecrime #ghoststory #supernatural

Is there any information about where the body was found in relation to the mill? Mills are often located in more remote river valleys or low-lying areas—perhaps the neighbor passed by it while transporting the body to the pit on the moor?

I wonder if there was a third party that Graham was trying to protect. I can imagine someone unwilling or unable to come forward themselves, confessing to Graham that they had seen/heard something incriminating, and then the story developing from there

I think he maybe witnessed the murder and was "haunted" by the guilt of the knowledge. Could be the haunting was a fib to cover himself or a psychological method of protection.

This reminds me of a story near me! The Greenbrier Ghost- 1897. Only known case in American legal history where information from a spirit helped conviction their murderer

This is extra crazy because Graham’s testimony is entirely hearsay (out of court statements from a person that is not the testifying witness used for the truth of the matter asserted), which was disallowed by English common law after the trial of sir Walter Raleigh in 1603. So however Graham got this information, he shouldn’t have been allowed to testify on it.

REALLY interested to hear your guys’ theories because I’m all over the place with this one. I either need a time machine or to elbow my way into the Durham archives to see these (and ideally some additional) dusty primary sources for myself to draw any further conclusions about what was going on here.

ooo, this one is good... I want to know more about the small town dynamics there before Anne came to town. This happened within the timeframe of the witch craze where we know supernaturally derived evidence was utilized to settle grudges and disruptions to the 'norm.' Whether the ghostly visit was factual or not, Anne was indeed murdered. Shortcutting the process seems more like damage control though.

I know that the Salem witch trials were at the tail end of witch hunting but I didn't realize how different the view of spectral evidence was in different regions. this case was 60 years prior and it's interesting to hear that there was so much skepticism here, and there were so many cultural differences. I guess this being a different type of crime, with physical evidence maybe plays a role also

Do you know what the 2 men’s stories were about what happened to Anne after she left her aunt’s house with her uncle and the other guy? And why they didn’t report her missing?
