No I would not hire the Gen Z kid whose parents called me. I am saying this as an Executive Marketing Director AND the mother of two 23 year olds. I will review the resume, help with interview prep and give them guidance on salary negotiation but the rest is on them.

YOU are spot on. I have a 21 year old. I did assist him with getting two summer jobs by ensuring his resume was updated and assisted him with his onboarding but it was more of a guided help. He’s been responsible with managing his time and schedule and has received great feedback. My work ended when he landed the job. Our kids do need some guidance with networking and there is nothing wrong with that. Advocating for them on work related issues with supervisor is where the line should be drawn

Our teenage son has autism, and will find his own job. We have helped him with where to apply, and interview prep, but he’s learning the hard way to navigate the process.

I managed for about three years and I will say I understand for a young adult under the age of 20, I get why the parents would want to call and or intervene. As a parent, I see many supervisors take advantage of young workers because they don’t know the laws. Parents get educated and get your child educated in some HR and labor laws in your state and don’t be afraid to ask a lawyer. Of course you can do the research as a back up, guide your child on how but always let your child be the messenger and executor

My son is going into his senior year in HS. I stopped speaking with his counselor since last year. We discuss then it's his job to meet and speak with his counselor and advocate for himself. I guide him I don't do for him. It's our jobs as parents to raise independent full functioning adults.

Even in HS we were taught how to make a resume and also taught how to apply to colleges. I think this is must to graduate from HS.

They bring their moms to fill out the applications too. We require the ability to read a tape measure and have a 7 question test with the app. The moms get uptight when we tell them they cannot take the test for them

I saw a young 18+ hand a resume into a retail job, accompanied by her mother, I was in disbelief. I asked the customer service desk employee if that happened a lot, she said, others have done that too. 😯
