I definitely get your point, but obesity can also come from genetics/diseases like PCOS, Cushing syndrome and then from medications like high dose steroids that treat certain autoimmune disorders. A lot of patients can’t afford the fancy meds with the least amount of side effects (thanks American Healthcare industry). It’s unfortunate, and I wish everyone was the same in which they could get results from just working out, but from seeing patients in the healthcare industry - this is not the case. I 100% agree if these patients still have the means to strength train then they absolutely should to avoid other health issues like osteoporosis.

I was obese. I was 115kg I’m now 56kg. I controlled what I shoved down my throat and managed my inflammatory markers. No one can convince me anyone’s happy being overweight.

But what about the women over 45,Who do all the right things and are still overweight and can’t lose the weight what’s their answer? What’s their label?

No but her point is valid. Most of the research we have on health are conducted on/for men. That’s why woman’s health is heavily lacking, especially if you are poc. Also Obesity is SUCH A COMPLEX health issue, this is not about ACCOUNTABILITY, its about genetics, poverty, food quality, environnement, metabolism…. But what do I know as a doctor… a shirtless white dude in a pool knows certainly better I guess.

Whilst I don't agree with everything this lady said and obesity is real, BMI is an outdated metric not taking into consideration muscle mass and ethnic nuances. Body fat % and the distribution of fat e.g waist measurement are absolutely the Superior metrics.

Mostly obesity is overeating. But there are some medications and conditions that make controlling weight difficult if not impossible.

I am a big BMI supporter. The majority of people do not carry the muscle mass of an athlete to disregard it entirely. It’s a tool just like the scales are, just like a measuring tape is, just like the mirror is. Everything together tells a much bigger a story. But if you are obese on the BMI it’s very liky that you are Obese sorry.

Its quite frustrating when people say the BMI is innacurate when it is a simple screening tool, and tbh, isnt that accurate in the context of those who weight train. Ie people who lift weights and have good muscle mass. But people have taken that statement and ran with it for everything. If the BMI scale says you are obese and you dont lift weights/have a lot of muscle, chances are you are obese

As someone on a weight loss journey (20kgs down so far and I’m saying this so everybody knows I am not biased against weight loss), all what you said doesn’t necessarily change the fact that the bmi scale could be updated to include a more diverse sample no?

Dude I blew up being pregnant and postpartum - turns out it was crazy stress. Cortisol makes you hold onto mad weight. Once that got sorted dropped 20kg like that!

Yeah, but we should have a healthy balance, we shouldn't be obese but we also dont have to look shredded all the time or be too skinny cause that isn't healthy either! And there is only these extremes instead of promoting healthy and fit body types, with sustainable body fat levels

Honestly that used to be me, I would always make excuses, genetics, slow metabolism, hormones etc… reality was I I overate, I ate crap and I barely moved. My sons 2nd birthday in feb 2024,I took him to a water park and I was too fat to go on the rides with him and that was my breaking point! I was 160kg then which was my heaviest ever and this morning I weighed in at 90kg I still have a way to go but being able to do everything now with my son is the best feeling ever. Watching him smile, nothing beats that. I can run after him, go down slides, go on roller coasters etc… I feel alive, I feel happy and most importantly I feel healthy.

True, but some obese people are still fit. Also there is “skinny-fat”. Being skinny but still unhealthy from overeating or other. Being skinny does not mean “healthy” being fat does not mean being “unhealthy” (not in every situation)

This is wild. I’m naturally curvy and often people complement my figure especially when I say I’m actively trying to lose weight. I have pcos, my back hurts and my bmi is way too high. This is about health and there’s no point being sensitive when your health is at risk if a medical professional deems me to be obese that’s that. No insecurity no denial the fact is holding too much weight is dangerous and I’m happy I’m actively fighting it.

Speaking from personal experience, I’ve been through hemodialysis and PD dialysis, a kidney transplant, chemotherapy, radiation, plasmapheresis, years of high-dose prednisone, on 9 different meds and I’m currently still dealing with constant medication changes, infusions, and injections. I’ve experienced significant weight fluctuations, including water weight, when my health has gotten worse or medications have changed, but I’ve never allowed my weight to get away from me or used my illness as an excuse. Whenever I’m physically able, I work out, and when I’m not, I focus on being mindful of what I eat without completely restricting myself. I understand that medical conditions can make weight management harder, but I also believe that when you know your health affects your weight, you have to adapt your lifestyle to what your body allows rather than give up on taking care of yourself.
