Who is trying to allegorize that passage? Obviously we take it literally. And for all those who don’t understand literalism, this might help. The rule of thumb is: “If the literal sense makes sense, seek no other sense, lest it result in nonsense.”

I’m evangelical. We understand the Bible to mean what the author intended. When there is a figure of speech we do not understand that to be literal. We interpret it in its context and genre.

Wouldn't a benevolent god make its texts literal & no nonsense? Eternal suffering is at stake here! How many have been turned away from the religion, because it has things ONLY primitive people would get wrong? Like 2 people being able to populate the earth, and again with Noah. People thought these stories WERE literal for many years, until we discovered you need thousands of people to do that. And our DNA diversity proves without doubt we didn't come from 2 people. Saying "it might not be literal" seems like an excuse, so you can move the goalposts whenever new knowledge is gained that disproves your religion
