As a native NYer, this is basically like the stroller rule: if someone has a stroller on the subway by themselves, you help them carry it up the stairs. You do not need to say anything to them, but you will always help carry the other end up the stairs

Someone once said the reason NYers don’t always comment on things like crying on the subway or street corner (or even what happened to you) is bc it’s a way to offer privacy to people in a city so full that there is no privacy in public. You can’t just go to your car to deal with it, so we’ll hand you tissue then actively ignore you so you can pretend you’re in your own space. I think it’s kind and nice. It’s just a different way to look at nice.

I read some theories about this in sociology classes and a very popular one said that in rural communities, people would have limited exposure to other people, so when you did, you wanted to make an extended conversation out of it. (The cashier may see many people in a day, but they know each of those people are farmers coming into town for their one weekly visit, so they want to check up on them and their family, and give them relevant news about other community members.) But in cities, where people are very tightly packed, constant human interaction becomes overwhelming, so the most polite dignity you can offer each other is privacy, even if it’s only the pretense of it. (Rather than staring or calling attention to your accident, people offered you help but otherwise tried to give you as much privacy as they can by not forcing a conversation.)
