Saltwater, high pressure, and bacteria gradually corrode the iron, resulting in the formation of rust deposits known as “rusticles,” which contribute to the breakdown of the hull. In recent years, surveys have shown that large portions of the wreck have deteriorated noticeably, particularly in areas exposed to ocean currents and marine organisms. These observations are used in marine archaeology studies to understand corrosion processes in deep-sea environments and to document changes affecting underwater archaeological sites.
