@kowalamedia: Jack Nicholson never made Stanley Kubrick sound obsessed with perfection. He made him sound obsessed with getting it right. Their relationship began years before The Shining, when Kubrick envisioned Nicholson as Napoleon in what would become one of cinema's greatest unmade films. Kubrick spent years researching the French emperor, convinced there had never been a truly great film about Napoleon. Nicholson came to understand a director who wasn't chasing flawless takes so much as refusing to stop searching. Then Hollywood changed. Sergei Bondarchuk's Waterloo (1970), itself an enormous historical epic about Napoleon's final campaign, failed at the box office. Studios lost their appetite for expensive period spectacles, and Kubrick's Napoleon was abandoned before production began. Much of that research would later find its way into Barry Lyndon. That same relentless curiosity comes into focus in Kubrick by Kubrick, built around rare audio interviews recorded over decades by film critic Michel Ciment, one of the few journalists Kubrick trusted enough to speak with at length. Rather than explaining Kubrick, the documentary lets Kubrick explain himself. Maybe that's why his films still feel alive. They don't feel overdesigned. They feel discovered.
