Actually bought it back in chapter five and really enjoyed it, it’s a shame they made it free, even going as far to not let people drop guns for others anymore to make it easier to progress.

There is last reality facilities on that planet, which implies that before they figured out how to integrate cubes into the zombies, they had a failed experiment and they left the planet to rot with most of the people dying. Later on cubes were integrated, making them much more obedient and powerful. The storm king most likely had something to do with the outbreak and the fast spreading of the virus.
