If the IAC valve is dirty, carbonized or clogged, it cannot properly regulate the airflow that keeps the engine stable when the driver does not step on the accelerator. The valve can remain too open and allow excessive airflow, causing high revs, unstable slowdown, delay in lowering the rpm or even intermittent acceleration. The diagnosis should begin by carefully checking all hoses and vacuum connections, looking for whistles, cracks or loose connections. The throttle body and IAC valve should also be inspected and cleaned with a suitable product. After cleaning, a relearning of slowdown may be necessary with a scanner or following the manufacturer's specific procedure.
