The Rosetta Stone survived for an entirely different reason. It had been reused as ordinary building material before French soldiers rediscovered it in Egypt in 1799. That single stone eventually became the key to deciphering ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. These artifacts remind us that history isn't preserved only because people choose to protect it. Sometimes, it survives because it is forgotten. And centuries later, a fortunate discovery gives the past a voice once again.
