Okay buckle up because we are about to dive into the absolute psychological trainwreck that is the Five Nights at Freddy’s lore. It all starts in the early 1980s with William Afton and Henry Emily who open Fredbear's Family Diner featuring springlock suits which can be worn by humans or operate as animatronics. If you breathe too hard on the internal springs they snap shut and violently crush your skeleton. William is a psychopath and Henry is a genius. Everything is fine until William gets jealous and decides to murder Henry’s daughter, Charlie Emily, outside the diner in the pouring rain. Charlie's soul possesses the Puppet animatronic, marking the beginning of the supernatural hauntings. Shortly after, William’s youngest son (the Crying Child) gets his head crushed inside Fredbear's jaws because his brother Michael and some bullies shoved him in there for a prank—the Bite of '83. This drives William completely off the deep end. He opens Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza and lures five kids—Gabriel, Jeremy, Susie, Fritz, and Cassidy—into the back room dressed as Spring Bonnie, murders them, and hides their bodies inside Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, Foxy, and Golden Freddy. The Puppet helps these souls possess the suits to get revenge. Meanwhile, William opens Circus Baby's Pizza World with "Funtime" animatronics designed to harvest children for a soul-essence substance called Remnant. His own daughter Elizabeth gets killed by Circus Baby. William sends his eldest son Michael Afton into the underground bunker to "fix" her, but the animatronics merge into Ennard, scoop out Michael’s organs, climb inside his skin to escape, and dump his rotting corpse into the sewer, where Michael revives because of Remnant. Fast forward to 1987: a new Freddy's opens with Toy Animatronics. William tampers with their facial recognition, leading to five more kids getting murdered and the "Bite of '87" where someone bites off a guard's frontal lobe. That place shuts down, the 1992 Freddy's opens, and Michael works there under an alias to free the souls. After it closes, William returns to destroy the evidence. But the ghosts corner him, forcing him to hide inside the decaying Spring Bonnie suit. Rain leaks from the roof, a water droplet hits the springlocks, and William is crushed to death. But he doesn't die. He rots inside a sealed wall for 30 years until 2023 when Fazbear's Fright opens, uncovers him, and he wakes up as Springtrap. The attraction burns but he survives. Finally, Henry Emily builds a trap disguised as a fake pizzeria in FNAF 6 to lure Springtrap, Scrap Baby, Molten Freddy, and Lefty into one room. Henry locks the doors and burns the entire place down, giving a legendary monologue while Michael stays inside to die, sending everyone's souls to heaven and William to hell. Except Cassidy (Golden Freddy) refuses to let William rest and creates an eternal torture nightmare for him in Ultimate Custom Night. Years later, a tech company scans old circuit boards for a VR game, accidentally unleashing William's consciousness as a digital virus named Glitchtrap.
