Originally laid down as the 3rd Yamato-class super-battleship, she was panic-converted into a heavily armored aircraft carrier after Japan lost four carriers at Midway. At 68,000 tons, she was the largest aircraft carrier of WWII and was literally built to serve as an unsinkable floating airbase. ...Except she was sunk just 10 days after commissioning on her very first voyage by a single US submarine (USS Archerfish). Because she rushed to sea before being fully finished, water tight doors weren't sealed, pumps weren't wired, and her crew had never run a damage control drill. To this day, she remains the largest warship ever sunk by a submarine in history!
