As velocity increases toward the speed of sound, local airflow over portions of the aircraft may become sonic, generating shock waves and rapidly increasing wave drag. The transonic regime is characterized by strong pressure gradients, shock-induced flow separation, changes in lift and drag coefficients, and shifts in the center of pressure that influence stability and control.
