YESSS say it louder! I worked in the kitchen for awhile and I kept harping on this, saying if the residents knew they would freak cause they're from a generation of no waste, i was told to SHUT IT!

That’s not true. Staff eat it up at many many different facilities. I have years of experience and ate many meals. All facilities run different but after staff eat it then the rest gets tossed.

garbage bags full of food are thrown out after each meal. The amount insane. And that goes into regular landfill, not even compost

I’ve seen new Canadians help themselves to huge meals, 3 meals sometimes. I bring my own food. If I’m working a double I might have something that isn’t something that is used on a regular basis like bread, milk, yogurt, eggs …I might have an apple or banana, or a cracker. Because this is their home, and they own it.

We aren’t even allowed to over to family of residents that are EOL that are staying with their loved ones. I agree I will never understand this rule. This is a ministry rule that needs to change

I also find many of the seniors grew up in a “no waste” era. Often you present their plate in front of them and they may say, oh that’s too much. I hope I can eat all that. Then when you clear their plate, they apologize for not finishing it. It really is a hot topic.

They could make so much out of tbe left overs. They should give it to the staff like you said.

After leaving LTC, I found a job in community group home support. One of my favourite parts is that I take the people I support grocery shopping. They pick out their own foods, we try a new/different fruit and veg every week. Exactly like at home. While still mandated by ‘compliance’ those boiled eggs would be turned into egg salad, or deviled eggs. It’s been over 8yrs since I worked in LTC and at that time, the actual budget was $5.65/day per resident. Seriously! Their explanation about diverting funding from one area to top up another is illegal. Against provincial rules. They’re referred to as ‘envelopes’. Each area of care has a specific detailed budget and every penny is accounted for. Sidebar: If there’s that much food waste, at some junction your dietary department head will be on the chopping block. LTC runs on very tight margins

In BC the staff can buy food if there’s some left after residents all eat.. breakfast 3$ lunch and dinner 5$ we also offer family members a plate if they happen to be there during a meal, if there’s enough. Left overs like boiled eggs, get turned into devilled egg sandwiches.. but there is a lot that gets tossed in the garbage.

Whatever way you look at it, it is funded for/by the clients. Perhaps if there is that much food left over, less should be prepared.

Yes most do throw it out. The ones I have been in and worked at say “they can’t give it to staff because it’s a health and safety issue”. Giving snacks. Most time it’s in the cart otherwise we don’t have access to it. We would “hide” snacks for night shift when someone would wake up.

I was given some of the food during my placement that's because I helped the dietary but it's ridiculous there are staff that can eat that food, the volunteers still going to the trash anyways.

They don’t eat a lot because the food is disgraceful. The amount of options they provide is foul. Most residents respond with “ewww” when you tell them about what’s being served so food is being disposed of because no one wants to eat it too

I have seen certain staff members eating food, that the residents refuse during my placement. They usually hide and eat it, and these are full time PSW with seniority.
