Venous blood flow from the legs back to the heart is not automatic — it heavily relies on the muscle pump mechanism. Every time you walk, stand, or move your legs, your calf and thigh muscles contract, squeezing the veins and pushing blood upward against gravity. One-way valves inside the veins prevent the blood from flowing backward. However, when you sit for long periods, these muscles remain inactive. Without regular contractions, blood begins to pool in the lower legs and feet. This pooling increases pressure inside the veins, causing them to stretch and swell. Over time, the delicate valves inside the veins can weaken or become damaged, leading to even poorer circulation. As a result, oxygen and nutrient delivery to the tissues decreases, while waste products build up. This can trigger leg swelling (edema), heaviness, aching, cramps, and fatigue. In the long run, prolonged sitting significantly raises the risk of varicose veins, spider veins, chronic venous insufficiency, and even dangerous blood clots (DVT). Simple solution: Make it a habit to move every 30–45 minutes. Stand up, walk around, stretch, or do simple ankle pumps and calf raises. Your legs — and your overall circulation — will thank you.
