THE FIFTH WIFE | Catherine Howard (c. 1523–1542) was Queen of England from 1540 to 1541 as the fifth wife of King Henry VIII. While Henry famously called her his "rose without a thorn," her early life was marked by deep vulnerability and neglect. After her mother died when Catherine was very young, she was sent to live in the notoriously lax household of her step-grandmother, the Dowager Duchess of Norfolk. Lacking proper guidance and protection, the young girl was preyed upon by older men in the household, most notably her music teacher, Henry Manox, and later a secretary named Francis Dereham. Thrust into the cutthroat Tudor court as a teenager to secure influence for her ambitious family, her youth and vivacity captivated the aging king. However, the secrets of her exploited past were inevitably weaponised by her family's political enemies. When her history and an alleged ongoing affair with courtier Thomas Culpeper were uncovered, Henry's infatuation turned to devastating rage. Arrested for treason and stripped of her royal title, she met the same tragic fate as her cousin, Anne Boleyn. At barely nineteen years old, she was executed by beheading at the Tower of London, paying the ultimate price for the machinations of the adults around her. #thetudors #catherinehoward #tudor #britishhistory #tudors
