After years of waiting, justice has finally spoken. Two of the nine people convicted over Susan Magara's kidnapping and murder have been sentenced to death, while the remaining seven will spend the rest of their lives in prison. But no sentence can erase the horror of what happened. Susan Magara, just 28 years old, was abducted while driving home in February 2018. Her kidnappers demanded one million US dollars from her family. When the money didn't come quickly enough, they committed an act of unimaginable brutality—they cut off two of her fingers, filmed it, and sent both the fingers and the video to her family as a warning. Even after the family paid $200,000, Susan was never set free. Instead, she was murdered in cold blood, and weeks later, her body was found dumped in Kigo, Wakiso District. It remains one of the most chilling criminal cases Uganda has ever witnessed. As the court finally closes this chapter with its judgment, I went back into the archives and uncovered something that still sends chills down the spine—the actual ransom call in which the kidnappers demanded money from Susan Magara's devastated family.
