At only 21 years old, Terry Bonchaka had already become one of Ghana’s most exciting hiplife stars. His real name was Terrence Nii Okang Mensah Adjetey, and his energy on stage made him unforgettable to fans across the country. In 2001, he rose to fame after winning the Miss Ghana Hiplife Championship. That victory launched his music career and introduced Ghana to a performer who was bold, creative, and impossible to ignore. Terry Bonchaka became famous for monster hits such as “Ghana Ladies (Gbeebi Akle),” “African Tsoo,” “Zoozey,” and “Puulele.” His songs filled dance floors and radio stations, while his lively performances made him a fan favorite. What made him special was not just the music. Terry’s fashion, dance moves, and confidence made him stand out in the early days of Ghanaian hiplife. He represented the energy and freedom of a new generation of musicians. But tragedy struck on 29 October 2003. After performing at the Akuafo Hall Week celebration at the University of Ghana, Legon, Terry Bonchaka was involved in a fatal car accident on the Legon-Madina road. He was rushed to the 37 Military Hospital but sadly died from his injuries. Though his life ended too soon, Terry Bonchaka’s legacy lives on. More than two decades later, his songs and performances are still remembered as part of Ghana’s hiplife history.
