Cook the onion paste, ginger-garlic paste, and chicken before adding the tomato puree and all the spices. Once the masala is well cooked, add the boiled daal and enough reserved water to create a creamy consistency. Simmer until the daal is completely soft and flavorful. Finish with a sizzling butter tarka of green chillies, whole red chillies, and cumin seeds, then serve hot with naan, tandoori roti, chapati, or steamed rice.
