I’d suggest you do more days or go for longer, there’s too much to explore for the days amount, and for the money you’d be spending on flights it’s just worth spending little more on accommodation or hotels

totally disagree with osaka. you have kobe and himeji at your door so I would stay 2 extra days to do those day trips (+1 more day if you want to do katsuoji temple which I think is defo worth)

These are the places most foreign visitors go. Since there are masses of tourists nowadays, this means you are greeted in English before Japanese, there are so many visitors, everything is written in English etc. I would for example skip Osaka and Okinawa, and go to Matsuyama (original castle, onsen), Okayama (Korakuen, beautiful garden), Fukuoka (eg Dazaifu, famous shrine). I'd rather see a lesser known site, but where you have to try to find your way or struggle getting the meal you want. The people will try to help you. This way, you experience some of the real Japan (of course there are also non touristic places in Tokyo).
