Cantonese is close to Middle Chinese (Tang/Song Dynasty chinese). That's why so many countries like Korea, Vietnam and other south east asian countries have similar sounding words as Cantonese. Cantonese and Hokkien are great sea traders. Korea, Vietnam and Japan also admired China for its culture and literature. They integrated a lot to their own nations.
