@tracy_tysonmd: Some kids will happily climb into my lap. Others will spend the entire visit peeking out from behind a parent’s legs. After more than 20 years as a pediatrician, I can tell you this: neither personality is “better.” Being cautious, slow to warm up, or shy isn’t a flaw. It isn’t something that needs to be “fixed.” It’s a temperament, not a character defect. Yes, we celebrate those sweet moments when a child finally decides we’re safe enough for a high five or a cuddle. ❤️ But we also see the quiet bravery of the child who watches, thinks, and takes their time. Your child’s worth is not measured by how quickly they trust a stranger. Whether they’re the life of the party or the tiny face peeking out from behind your legs, they’re exactly who they’re supposed to be—and we love getting to know them at their own pace. Parents: there’s no need to apologize for a shy child. We see them. We appreciate them. And we’ll meet them where they are. 💙 #Pediatrics #Parenting #ToddlerLife #ChildDevelopment #Temperament

Love this! Since my kids were little, I’ve done high fives and fist bumps with them. I always tell their providers at the beginning of an appt that “you can offer [kid] a high five - they may be up for it!” That way the provider gets to interact with my kids (especially my non-speaking kid), and my kids are still in control of their body/get to choose their level of interaction/can opt out if they want to. We also talk about how some interactions aren’t optional (med exams with a parent present, safety issues like holding hands to avoid running out in the street, and hygiene like brushing teeth and the dentist), but otherwise, they get to choose what they’re comfortable with.
