When I first told people I was going to Bosnia, the number one question I kept getting was: ‘But isn’t it dangerous? Especially for women?’ And still as of yesterday I received another message asking if it’s safe to travel there. And I get it, the association so many people still have with this country comes from its past. The war of the 90s left a mark not only here, but also on how the rest of the world perceives Bosnia. But here’s the thing, Bosnia today is not the Bosnia many people imagine. The narrative of danger and instability lingers mostly because of history and old headlines, not because of the reality on the ground now. What I’ve found here is warmth, generosity, and an overwhelming sense of hospitality. People go out of their way to help and to welcome you. Is it important to be mindful of safety? Absolutely, but let’s be honest that’s true in any country you visit. You take the same precautions here that you would anywhere else in the world, stay aware of your surroundings, trust your instincts, don’t be wandering off in the middle of the night in some dark secluded alleyway etc etc you get my gist. But what you shouldn’t do is let fear or outdated misconceptions hold you back from experiencing a place that has so much beauty and culture to offer. I’ve felt safe, welcomed, and embraced here as a traveler and if anything, it’s made me realise how much Bosnia deserves to be seen beyond the lens of its past. This country isn’t just its history, it’s its people, its landscapes, its stories, and its vibrant spirit. And that’s what makes it worth discovering. @bosniaandherzegovina #bosnia #bosniaandherzegovina #visitbosnia #travelbosnia #sarajevo
