If you’re looking for Hoodoo books published before 1970, there are relatively few that were written specifically about Hoodoo by Black practitioners. Much of the early written record comes from folklorists, anthropologists, and journalists documenting African American folk traditions. Here are some of the most important historical sources: Early Hoodoo and Rootwork Books The Long Lost Friend (1820, John George Hohman) Although not a Hoodoo book, this Pennsylvania Dutch grimoire became widely used by African American rootworkers in the South. It contains charms, prayers, and folk remedies that blended into Hoodoo practice. Hoodoo, Conjuration, Witchcraft, Rootwork By Harry Middleton Hyatt One of the largest collections ever compiled on Hoodoo. Hyatt traveled through the South interviewing hundreds of Black root doctors, healers, and conjure workers during the 1930s. The work preserves their own words, spells, beliefs, and traditions. Black Magic: A Picture History By Milo Rigaud Primarily about Vodou and African diaspora spirituality, but useful for understanding the broader traditions that influenced Hoodoo. African American Folklore That Includes Hoodoo Mules and Men By Zora Neale Hurston Essential reading. Hurston was an African American anthropologist and novelist who documented Hoodoo practices in Florida and Louisiana after apprenticing with practitioners herself. Negro Folk Rhymes By Thomas W. Talley Includes songs, sayings, and folklore that provide cultural context for Hoodoo. Drums and Shadows By the Georgia Writers’ Project Interviews with formerly enslaved people and their descendants along the Georgia coast discussing spirits, haints, conjure, and folk beliefs. Earlier Folklore Collections The Conjure Woman By Charles W. Chesnutt Fiction inspired by African American conjure traditions. While it’s not a manual, it reflects beliefs that were widespread after Reconstruction. Voodoos and Obeahs By Joseph J. Williams A comparative study of West African and Caribbean spiritual traditions. Some discussions touch on American conjure. #hoodoo #blackspirituality #spiritualtok #witch #fyp
