A really good summary of so much history! I feel like I’m starved for information on anything East and South of Jerusalem because history, the way it’s taught in America, starts in Greece and Rome, is followed by Europe, ending with the British and American empires - only mentioning the rest of the world in passing. It’s more like propaganda than history. At university I took a survey class about the Ancient Near East, with an Assyria specialist with a healthy contempt for “classics.” It changed my entire view of history — but it still feels like a struggle to learn the history that wasn’t taught.

Hold on there The “Arab Golden Age” that you are referring needs a rather large asterisk. It was a cosmopolitan intellectual civilization, not an ethnically Arab scientific enterprise. Persians and other non-Arab peoples produced many of the period’s most famous scholars, Greek, Persian and Indian intellectual traditions supplied important foundations. Please do not turn barbarian ignorants into an ethnic copyright on everybody else’s achievements. Otherwise England can start collecting Nobel Prizes every time somebody publishes in English.
