veterinarian here. coyote's behavior is very playful and looks "safe" but absolutely would I not allow this. why? bc coyotes carry rabies, canine distemper, lepto, mange, so many different gi parasites. People forget they are wild animals... living outside...

Wolves does that. They can play with dogs and flee. Dog chases them and wolves can eat the dog.

the myth prob came from dogs playing with coyotes and then either the coyote pack rocking up after a while or the coyote wandering off and the dog following it then getting jumped by a pack that thinks the dog is stalking their pack member lol.

Coyotes are really sweet most of the time. They just have a bad rap because they kill livestock, cats, etc and they can have rabies but they're generally not aggressive with humans. Probably wouldn't let my dog play bc of the rabies/etc but just saying

For all the people concerned, coyotes don’t lure dogs. It’s running away from the dog that’s CHASING it. Coyotes will protect their pack mates, which looks like an aggressive attack. It’s not. Its defense. In this case, the coyote is likely curious. It’s not acting overtly aggressive. Coyotes are curious animals. Still, a better topic of discussion should be keeping your dog on a leash and actually training it.

I had a half coyote growing up she was a great dog but she was aggressive with people she didn’t knew, she was put down by animal control because she attacked a man. Despite the man being up to no good following a girl that lived in the same street

Nope. Back home. We call this the three kill shot. One coyote plays. The second waits beyond does the wound bite. The third coyote farther in the bush does the kill bite. I’ve seen it with my own eyes at my neighbors

A coyote once fetched, stoll and ran away with my frisbee after watching me play with my dog. It came out of the bushes. I think it literally wanted the toy because he wanted to play like a dog.

I love animals both domestic and wild, but at the end of the day a coyote is a wild animal. I don’t know if it could hurt my dog or what kind of diseases it could be carrying.

I had two coyote dens next to my house. I don't they they try to lure dogs, but if your dog is dumb/too friendly or smells one in heat it may chase them. It will find the rest. The rest will be pissed if they already have pups. I wouldn't teach them coyotes are friendly. They simply don't have to "lure" dogs. People just don't train them.

one time i saw a coyote taking a stroll down the sidewalk with some guy and thought it was his dog bc of how chill it was. rolled down the window to say his dog was cute. 😭.

The idea that a coyote would lure a predator back to its back, where the pups and the elderly stay for safety, is fcking ridiculous. It doesn’t make any sense for any animal to do that. If your dog follows a coyote and then gets k!lled by the coyote, it’s because the coyote was keeping your dog AWAY from the pack.
