Most phones displayed text-heavy WAP pages on tiny black-and-white or low-color screens. Internet speeds were powered by 2G networks like GPRS and EDGE... So pages often loaded line by line. Typing a website address wasn't easy either. You used a T9 keypad, pressing the same button several times just to enter a single letter. There was no pinch-to-zoom... No touchscreen... And most websites weren't designed for mobile devices. Instead... People relied on lightweight mobile browsers and simplified versions of websites like Google. On top of that... Mobile data was often charged per kilobyte, making every page load something users had to think twice about. Looking back... It was a slow experience—but it laid the foundation for the smartphones we use today.
