@rabbi.noah18: Is sushi a Jewish food? It might be now. On Shabbat we have a mitzvah called עֹנֶג שַׁבָּת. Oneg Shabbat. The pleasure of Shabbat. And one of the most beautiful ways to fulfill it is through בָּשָׂר וְדָגִים, meat and fish. Fish has always been the Jewish way of expressing closeness to God on Shabbat. For Ashkenazim that meant gefilte fish. For me it means sushi. Spicy mayo included. And here is the beautiful thing about מִנְהָג, minhag, Jewish custom. The word minhag shares its root with מַנְהִיג, manhig, leader. The way you bring Judaism into your home, the foods you choose, the rituals you create, that is how you lead your family into holiness. In five generations my descendants are going to associate sushi with Shabbat the way I associate chicken soup and challah with it. And it will be holy to them. Because that is how minhag works. You take what you love and you sanctify it. Gefilte fish was once just fish. Sushi is just fish. Shabbat Shalom.
