“I like hard work. I like working hard. I like to achieve. I will not just sit down, cross my legs, and be attended to simply because I am the First Lady. I want to serve the people, and that’s exactly what I’m doing.” — First Lady Maryam Babangida, 10 September 1987. Those words reflected the vision behind the Better Life for Rural Women Programme, which Maryam Babangida launched on 10 September 1987. Rather than limiting herself to ceremonial duties, she used her position to promote literacy, vocational training, healthcare, agriculture, and economic opportunities for rural women across Nigeria. The Better Life Programme became one of the most influential social intervention initiatives of its time, establishing women’s cooperatives, skills acquisition centres, and development projects in communities across the country. Contemporary reports credited the programme with empowering more than 40,000 women through various training and economic empowerment initiatives, while also bringing national attention to the needs and contributions of rural women. Nearly four decades later, Maryam Babangida remains one of Nigeria’s most remembered First Ladies, not only for her elegance and charisma but also for her commitment to improving the lives of ordinary Nigerian women. Her Better Life Programme left a lasting mark on women’s development and inspired similar social initiatives in the years that followed.
